Not only a community center, but “a home away from home” for women and their families, this project entails converting a former apartment building centrally located on Crown Street in Crown Heights, Brooklyn into a state-of-the-art community center that will provide for the social, educational and spiritual needs of its residents.
Crown Heights, the Jerusalem of the West and an international center for the Chabad-Lubavitch movement, sees tens of thousands of visitors yearly who seek spiritual nourishment, education and guidance. Machon Chana, renowned for its one of a kind international women’s yeshiva, a school for adults from secular backgrounds who seek to return to their roots and acquire a formal Jewish education, has attracted over 15,000 women from the world over in the last 40 years, a large percentage of whom have settled in the community, married and started families. Such families now comprise about 30% of the community. “The Bayit” seeks to address their needs, as well as the needs of the community and visitors.
